Blog Party at Kit and Ace

June 19, 2016 · 2 Comments

During Black Friday last year I discovered Kit And Ace in walnut creek. Even my husband and dad happily pursued their selection of clothing mostly because of the free gourmet treats, while my mom and I enjoyed free champagne. I bought a pair of pants called the York Pant. They were grey, cuffed and stretchy but looked dressy but felt wonderful. Since then I have been on the hunt for the pair in black. Unfortunately I have yet to find them but enjoyed a lovely night at the Burlingame location for a event called the Blog Party.

Blog party was founded by Jamie from j for Jamie for bloggers and brands to get to together, meet, and collaborate. This was my first event and I was so excited it was at one of my favorite stores.

Highlights were tasting delicious wines from Hall Wines and bringing home a bottle of my new favorite pineapple coconut water from Zico. I met in real life Suki from her Super Duper Fantastic Blog and many other bloggers like Nisha from her Simplistique blog. Added bonus I came home with a lovely swag bag with treats from Flash Tattoos, Yusu Soap (a lovely lavender flavor that I used right up!), Oh! Shiny Paper Co, Bare Minerals Lip Gloss, and Punk Post Company.

I had a great time mingling with the folks from blog party, Kit and Ace, as well as other bloggers! Looking forward to the next event!

Finding Aloha In San Francisco

May 27, 2016 · 6 Comments

I’ll be the first to admit I have a huge blogger/girl crush on Goldfish Kiss. Her posts make me want to run on the beach and book a flight to Hawaii, like right now. I saw recently that she and her family are moving to my hood, the Bay Area. This inspired me to share some of my favorite Hawaii themed places to eat and visit in the SF Bay Area.

Blue Hawaii SF

BlueHawaii1
Blue Hawaii’s Acai

Acai is an amazing healthy treat. This cute shop also has a location on the Big Island. In SF it’s very conveniently located in the Embarcadero center with easy parking and access to public transportation. Acai is a treat you don’t have to feel too guilty in indulging in unlike most of the favorites in this post. Acai is loaded with antioxidants that can positively effect your health. The shop offers several different bowls but I much prefer the basic blue Hawaiian with banana, granola, berries, and a bit of honey. This bowl clocks in at 300 calories, not too shabby. For those fish fans Blue Hawaii also offers fresh poke bowls during the week.

Pineapples SF

Tucked away in SF near Balboa Park BART is Pineapples. The cafe was started by a couple who is from Guam. Their menu offers everything from shave ice, Acai bowls, Kona coffee waffles, tropical teas (love the mint lemonade and likiloi passion tea), sandwiches to dole whips. I am a huge fan of everything I have tried here but the dole whip is the icing on the cake. I love that it’s much cheaper than the Disneyland version at $3 AND I can add toppings like Li-hing and mochi. You can even make it into a float if you heart (or stomach) desires or make it fancy with ice cream.

Aloha Festival-San Mateo

The tasty Malasada Booth
The tasty Malasada Booth

Every year around the first week of August, the San Mateo event center becomes a little taste of Hawaii with their annual aloha festival. The event itself it free but if you drive it’s $10 per car. My husband like to get there early and make a beeline to the food booths in the back that have (you guessed it!) malasadas, shave ice, and much more. Then we usually spend a hour or so browsing the booths inside the event center. They have a mini Hawaii grocery that had my favorite teas, Li-hing, candies, and mochi mixes. A word of caution here is that one year I bought some Hawaiian tea only to find it expired so check the dates! Many of the booths have beautiful arts, crafts, and clothing too. Outside there is traditional hula and live music so it’s a fun filled day.

Noelani’s Bar and Lounge

Nestled in one of the cutest downtown areas in the Bay Area is Noelani’s. The restaurant started by two best friends and locals from Oahu and the Big Island. I recently celebrated New Year’s Eve here. Everything was so delicious from the Tsunami fries (that were tossed with Li-hing) to dessert of hula pie (homemade mud pie with Oreo cookie crust, fudge, vanilla bean/coffee ice cream and toasted coconut) and malasadas. They had live entertainment for New Years which made the meal even more special!

‘aina

IMG_5071-1

My best meal hands down in 2015 was from this locally owned pop up in Bernal Heights. Everything was fresh and locally sourced with a modern Hawaii flair. Now ‘aina has their full time restaurant in the Dogpatch. Reservations are hard to come by but they do set aside tables for walk in. ‘Aina is locally owned and operated by Jordan Keo who is a chef from Hilo on the Big Island. He has worked at Michelin-starred French restaurant La Folie and temped palettes at Google cafes and Airb&b. At one one of their most recent pop-ups (and extremely rainy) at the El Rio my husband and I met Jordan’s wife, Cheryl Liew who was absolutely delightful. She is the CFO and co-owner of the restaurant. She made me love the message of the restaurant (living off of the land) even more! Looks like their menu at the Dogpatch location has boozy tropical drinks (along with their trademark guava malasadas) so I can not wait to check out in person.

5 Things I Learned At Prince’s Piano & A Microphone Show

April 8, 2016 · 4 Comments

Patience is virtue and you’ll be handsomely rewarded at a Prince show. My husband and I originally wanted to see Prince at one of his small shows at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. We tried to no avail secure tickets. I even looked on the Ticketmaster app the night of show and saw one pair left but at $500 a pop, but as a newly married couple, budget was a concern. Thankfully, Prince announced another show at the Oracle and I became best friends with the Ticketmaster app again. For a few days after the tickets went on sale the only tickets showing were the most expensive $500+. (Insert sad face) So I kept trying the app each day up to the show and finally by Wednesday night we saw a pair in our price range and we snagged them. The seats were right in the middle of the arena about one section up so we had a great view of the stage and screens. This was a theater in the round type show and for Prince a very different show with just him a piano and mic. Not only did my husband and I witness a incredible show we came home with some valuable lessons.

One man, one mic, one piano can be as powerful as a full band.

Personally I’m all about acoustic and unplugged concerts. I would gladly choose a stripped down performance over a full band. To the artist’s credit, Prince is absolute piano beast! I could totally picture him in the Blue Note in New York or Yoshi’s here in the Bay Area. I felt during the show that I might have been in a small jazz club or perhaps Prince’s home (since he was wearing purple pj’s). I think most people forget how huge and diverse his catalog is. He’s been a active artist since the late 70’s! I find I hear his catalog mostly on Adult Contemporary Radio now (you know, the stations that turn into 24 hour Christmas fest from Thanksgiving on) and I think we all forget how revolutionary his music is. His set list jumped erratically from “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” to to the politically charged “Baltimore” with ease and not missing a beat. I have read online that Prince wanted to challenge himself with these “unplugged” style shows. I cannot imagine the pressure of covering his expansive catalog and instrumentation with just a piano. He really made it looks so easy and effortless.

A crappy venue experience can be forgotten

Upon entering the venue we had to go through a long line of security and metal detectors which took awhile. It felt like there was not enough staff to get everyone through quickly. Then once we were inside we could not go to our seats. The tickets and all communication lead us to believe that the show started promptly at 9pm. As the time crept closer we all got a little impatient and the venue’s heat was turned on and felt like a sauna and as more people trickled in it got very crowded. I heard from my friends outside that security stopped letting people go in the Oracle. Honestly, I would have traded places with them. I broke down and bought a $6 water because I was getting so hot. We learned later that there were sound issues and Prince did not want anyone inside until they were resolved. Once we did sit down and the music started I think we all forgot for the duration of the show about the difficulty at the door.

Prince fans let it all out but are polite

True story, my husband and I sat behind two lovely hard core Prince gal fans. They were decked out in vintage circa 1986 Purple Rain t-shirts. Since the show was at Oracle we all had seats with not too much room between rows. These gals were so pumped about the show that they simply just wanted to get up and dance. Rather than just standing in the row blocking my view, they would crouch and move into the entrance when they wanted to rock out. It struck me how kind this was and was much appreciated.

You can enjoy a concert without a phone

Most shows these days everyone is one their phone. Whether they are texting, tweeting, snapping, sometimes people’s screens gets in the way of the show. This does not happen at Prince’s concerts. As soon as we sat down a huge screen read NO PHONES NO CAMERAS. Even before the show security was warning us to keep them in our bags. While I saw plenty of pictures on Instagram after the show security was hard pressed to keep the picture taking at a minimum. In all honestly if you don’t have to worry about the perfect picture you can just enjoy the show, simple as that.

The audience has to put as much energy in Prince, otherwise it’s over

Countless times Prince invited the crowd to sing with him especially when he got up and went “piano-less” with “When Doves Cry” powered by a drum machine. We quickly learned if we did not sing with the same passion and intensity Prince approved of he would stop the song and make us start over.

The ultimate lesson is that if you have a opportunity to see a Prince with just a piano, do it!

Movin’ To The Beat At Ritual SF

Ritual Self Check-In
Ritual Self Check-In

I’m not a yogi and the practice of yoga has never ever been my thing. Flexibility has never been easy for me and I have never touched my toes (without bending my knees) but I know yoga is good for me so I have always tried to find a studio class that gets me and I feel like Ritual Hot Yoga does that.

The studio is located in the Soma district and spitting distance from the 101 freeway. I was immediately greeted and signed in using a touchscreen and then given a quick tour. Ritual has everything you need to clean up after class with showers, towels, and supplies to dry your hair. The studio also supplies you with a  yoga mat, fancy yoga towel, clips to secure your mat, and a yoga block. I loved that there was bottled water and tea as well.

The class is centered around moving and breathing to the beat which makes it a very quick flow of yoga poses in a heated candlelit room. I found my first class to be liberating because I didn’t have a enough time to be frustrated by any of the poses because you have to move to the next one.

The instructor opened the class with the mantra for the week which was Santosha, which means contentment and satisfaction. She eloquently described how we are conditioned to always look to want more in life.  Rarely do we take a moment to be grateful and content with where we are now. How can we appreciate our future accomplishments if we can not be grateful today?
Santosha challenges us to find peace in the moment—to accept and appreciate what is, no matter what that looks like. It’s about looking to yourself for a sense of fulfillment and trusting that you have everything you need. During the class it struck me how often I think if I had x (money, status, whatever) I’d be happier. If we choose to live our life like this we are going to be consistently looking for more when we need to look to ourselves for everything we need.
Ritual Also Offers Theme Classes!

During the class the instructor leads you through poses in time with music from popular music like Rihanna and Tinashe. She walks around to give hands on guidance and there are two more helpers that do the same thing. At first I was alarmed when someone helped me into a pose but after a few times I found it comforting and helpful. I also found myself out of breath and completely covered in sweat. At the end of class during Shavasana the assistants lay a cool eucalyptus scented towel on your forehead and come around to do mini massages. If this is not the ultimate perk of a yoga studio I don’t know what is. I ended my practice with some complementary yogi tea before departing back into the real world.

Makin’ Tiki Drinks At Trader Vic’s

March 3, 2016 · 19 Comments

Cocktailsign
Let The Mixin’ Begin
I have been interested in the drinks a while, amassing a rather large tiki mug collection. I had yet to actually make a tiki drink so a workshop was perfect for me! I rallied my husband and my tiki drinking buddies and bought a $59 (this was including tax) ticket to the workshop.
Finalbook
Our Inspiration For the Night!
Before I dive into the workshop itself I thought I would give a brief history of tiki and Trader Vic’s. Trader Vic’s is a Polynesian themed restaurant chain headquartered in Emeryville California. The chain was started by Vic Bergeron who made the first mai tai cocktail at Trader Vic’s in 1944. The he introduced it at Honolulu’s Royal Hawaiian Hotel, altering the recipe, pineapple juice instead of the more labor-intensive, fresh squeezed lime, so the bar staff could make the distinctive cocktail in quantity.
I am happy to say I came in to the workshop not thinking it would be so amazing, but it was. It felt well worth our money. As soon as we arrived our cars were promptly valeted. Then we were directed to a huge and immaculately decorated private room with bar. Almost immediately we got tasty mai taus and pupus. There were a few tables set up so my group and I found one to get settled on. There were servers passing apps like crab Rangoon and breaded fried green beans. I don’t eat fish but my party mates loved the crab Rangoon I ate my fair share of the beans and other veggies. Once everyone was settled the trader Vic’s staff read from a original 1940’s signed my trader Vic’s himself cocktail book. Each of us (2 at a time) had a couple of chances to go behind the bar and receive personalized instructions. I never been behind the bar before so I felt like this was a special honor.
The Amazing Green Beans!
The drinks we made were 1944 Mai Tai (Royal Amber rum, almond concentrate, fresh lemon and lime), Mahukona (brugal rum, triple sec, fresh lemon juice, and bitters), La Florida Daiquiri (brugal rum, maraschino liquor, fresh lemon, and grapefruit juice), Gilded Lady (brugal rum, peach brandy, Hendrick’s gin, and fresh orange juice). If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be the La Floridia Daiquiri, I loved the combo of maraschino cherry liquor  and grapefruit. Also very fun to make was the mai tai, not only did you have to vigorously shake the drink but you had to slap the mint to add as the garnish. This method apparently releases the flavor and it’s pretty fun to slap the mint. This exercise just means laying out the fresh mint on your hand and slapping it with the other.
Trader Vic’s Autograph!
I think it was Trader Vic’s intention to have each guest (I think there was about 25  attending this workshop) do one round behind the bar but since there was a lull of guests  right before the  ending of the workshop my friends and I all got another chance to make another cocktail. I loved the personalized instructions and access to all of Trader Vic’s bar accessories and ingredients. It was nice to have apps and snacks before the drinking began as tiki drinks are extremely strong.

Makin' Drinks!
Makin’ Drinks!
Once the session concluded we each left a workshop with an amazing gift bag! The trader Vic’s designed bag had their signature Mai tai mix, Mai tai glass, magnet, and recipe card. Any time I go somewhere and get a gift bag (or I used to call it “goody bag) I’m a happy camper. I haven’t tried the mix yet but I have heard it is one of the better mixes on the market and the recipe is fairly straightforward. My group also decided that the party had simply not ended at the workshop and that we all wanted more food so we sat down in the bar area to enjoy a late dinner.

Tiki Goodie Bags!
It sounds like Trader Vic’s does these cocktail workshops quarterly and I definitely plan to do another. Cheers!
