Disney World For Disneyland Fans

September 3, 2017 · 15 Comments

The gorgeous Epcot view..
The gorgeous Epcot view…
My first time in Disney World will be something I’ll remember for while. My husband and I had a deal if I went to Star Wars Celebration we would also spend a few days in Disney World. Of course I ended up loving celebration so it was a win for the both of us. Since we tend to go to Disneyland here in California we wanted the experience to be unique to Florida so we choose both Animal Kingdom and Epcot. Keep reading for some highlights of our trip.
Ducktales Woo woo!
Ducktales Woo woo!

I’m totally obsessed with the new DuckTales cartoon so I am so glad I took this picture! There were  dozens of really cool Disney character topiaries all over Epcot which were fun to discover.

The Polynesian lobby
The Polynesian lobby
I’m a huge fan of Hawaii, Tiki, all things tropical and adorable so visiting the Polynesian Hotel was a must. I wished I was there during the day to take in all the hotel’s splendor but even at night the lobby is enchanting. I spent a moment in their shop BouTiki and bought a cute tropical top for myself and treats for loved ones at home.  Next we made our way to Trader Sam’s Grog Gotto downstairs for a pre-dinner drink. As a fan of Anaheim’s cute Tiki bar Trader Sam’s I made sure we had time to enjoy the much hyped Polynesian Pearl. This drink comes in a cute pearl cup from a clam at the bar! Plus I heard there are magical Black pearls that you can get if you are lucky! The drink is a blend of RumChata, Grand Marnier, cinnamon, and tropical juices. Trader Sam’s Grotto in Florida had all the same magic as the California location much more space it was awesome not having to wait outside to get in!
I heard a lot of hype about the restaurant Ohana from everyone I spoke with so we booked a dinner the only spot we could secure at 10pm one night. Maybe it was because we had a late dinner but the pineapple bread was only OK. (The hype was real online for this item!) The bread pudding was quite good and thoroughly enjoyed the family style salad and chicken. Also we were treated to seeing the fireworks from the magic kingdom with piped in music when we arrived and a ukulele sing-along after. I loved the Tiki ambiance but might pass on this next time. Plus I heard you can get many items al la carte at other places in the hotel.
Hovito Mojtio with a "poison dart"

My sister in law  and I hit up Disney Springs while my husband spent an additional day at Star Wars Celebration. Disney Springs is like Downtown Disney on steroids, much bigger and a lot more things to do. One unique thing at Disney Springs is that you can ride amphicars, which is a guided tour in a car that rides on land and floats in the water. These are beautiful and really neat to watch but with the price tag of $125, a bit too rich for my blood.  As we walked around we took in all the shopping which varied from chain stores to more unique Disney specific shops. I discovered they had the store Basin which is popular for soaps and bath bombs. I personally love their chamomile solid shampoo bars. They are perfect for travel when you don’t have a ton of space. This store actually used to be at Downtown Disney in California but since went out of business.

Jock Lindsey's Hanger Bar Communication Nook!

For lunch I knew we had to try Jock Lindsey’s Hanger Bar which is a Indiana Jones themed bar based on Jock  who was a pilot in the movies. The decor and theme is almost overwhelming with clutter from Jock’s life as pilot inside. We decided to eat on the patio which had a amazing view of the water. I’d been hearing about the famous drink the hovito mojtio which was a pisco drink with fresh lime juice, mint, simple syrup topped with soda water. We also enjoyed some pork belly buns as a snack. One thing I should have kept in mind was keeping hydrated (especially with afternoon beverage) as I think I got overly dehydrated walking around and while Jock Lindsey’s food/beverages were great I went back to the hotel that day with a migraine.
Our delightful tour guide

One of the highlights of being at Epcot during the Flower & Garden Festival was some of the cool limited time activities at the park and one of those was a free tea tour put on by Twinings. You meet at the Tea Caddy shop in the U.K. Pavilion to put your name on the list and they give you a couple of laminated cards. The tour is about twenty minutes which guides you through their traditional Tea garden where there are tea cups set up with different ingredients grown for tea. Certainly you could do this on your own but we found the tour delightful. During the tour we learned that the company is 300 plus years old and started in 1706. Some other tea facts below:
  • Twinings made it through Boston tea party
  • Our guide was from Wales and noted that while Pumpkin Chai is huge here it is not popular at all in the U.K., in fact before she come to the US she had never had a pumpkin!
  • Twining forget to copyright Earl grey flavor, so you see it everywhere
  • Nyle from One Direction likes lemon and ginger flavor
  • Berry Fusion is their latest tea that has sangria base which is hibiscus flowers that make the pink color
  • Green Jasmine has no jasmine in it. The green tea leaves absorbs the smell
  • You can put tea bags in shoes to help absorb any bad smells (our tour guide admitted that stuffing shoes with tea bags is common practice for her back home)
As the tour ended back at the Tea Caddy we were able to try samples of iced tea and bring home a few packets of tea!
Everest View from Animal Kingdom
Everest View from Animal Kingdom
Disney is known for magic and I had no idea we’d be picked for a magical experience while at the Animal Kingdom. We only had a half day at this park but since Pandora wasn’t open yet we knew we could get through most of the rides and get back to the hotel in time for our flight. As we were about to end our day we saw that there was a performance available for their live version of the Lion King. We walked in the gates a women saw our buttons that said “1st visit” so she asked us if we wanted a special experience for the Lion King. Of course we said yes and found ourselves front row center to enjoy the show. I was very impressed with this show it’s Broadway level production and the actor/actresses are fantastic. There a few sections of acrobatics that were really entertaining as well. It was bizarre to have no one in front of us during the show and there were moments where the actors were so close I felt like they were singing right to me. If you make it to Animal Kingdom be sure not to miss this show, who knows maybe you’ll get picked to be in the front row too!

Overall, for only two days I thought we saw and experienced many unique things to Disneyworld. I can’t wait to go back and spend more time and possibly stay at Polynesian hotel which is now on my bucket list.

A Walk in Walt’s Shoes

November 29, 2016 · 18 Comments

Disneyland is a place rich in history but often visits are so time crunched you can barely enjoy it. There is a great way to learn about the beginnings of the park AND enjoy a few rides.

Disneyland offers a tour everyday in the park at 9:30 am and 10:30 am for $109.00. If you are a annual pass holder you can save 15% and Disney Visa card holders also can get a discount. Allow yourself 4 hours to enjoy the tour, as the first time my mom and I attempted we had to leave early to catch a flight so we missed the best part of the tour which is the Dream suite.

Disney asks guest to check in early at the tour meet-up area, where you can choose your lunch items. I choose a turkey sandwich, water, and my now favorite dessert the item in the parks the Matterthorn macaroon.

Our tour begins!

Our tour started with the history of the opening of the parks in 1955.  We learned that Walt’s apartment was actually above the firestation and if Walt was in the parks the light in the window would be on. To this day the light remains on in tribute of Walt. As we meandered past the firehouse we learned that Main Street is actually based on Marceline, Kansas Walt’s hometown. We spent a moment in front of the flagpole and heard the famous speech Walt delivered when the parks opened. I also thought it was hilarious to learn that there were so many weeds present when the park opened that with time running out to pull them Walt came up with a idea to add signs with the Latin names of the weeds to make it seems as they were supposed to be there. On opening day there were 28 thousand guests and in the first week the park had over a million.

As we continued on our tour that day here are some fun facts we collected:

  • Disneyland is designed like a wheel where the center of the park near the castle on Main Street is the center  and the spokes are leading out to all the lands.
  • Fantasyland is known as the”heart of Disney” and the first land built.
  • The carousel in Fantasyland is the oldest attraction with all white horses so no one would fight over who could ride the white horse.
  • Walt Disney was a very patriotic man: he wanted to enlist in the military, but at the time he was only 16, but lied on his birth certificate so he could join the Red Cross Corp.
  • In 1966 the real mayor of New Orleans came to Disneyland’s New Orleans Square to dedicate the land
  • Walt Disney and his wife Lillian loved to take their family on long road trips. On one road trip Walt bought a Petrified tree. (Picture below)

A great highlight of the tour was lunch. Sometime lunch is during the middle of the tour or the end depending on when the Dream Suite is available for viewing. I highly recommend the Matterthorn Macaroon!

Delicious Lunch From Jolly Holiday

Now here is where I think the Disney Magic really shines! We meandered around Indiana Jones ride to a secret area near Pirates Of the Caribbean. We split our group in two to ride a fancy elevator to Walt’s Dream suite. The suite is 2,220 square foot living space right above Pirates Of the Caribbean that opened in January 2008. In the 1960’s Walt decided he needed a larger area to entertain VIPs so he enlisted the help of Dorthea Redmond (whose is famous for some of the set designs in the movie “Gone With The Wind”) to design the layout. Walt’s wife Lillian and Walt Disney studio decorator Emile Kuri were tasked with furnishing and decorating. Unfortunately Walt never saw the Dream suite completed as he died in 1966. The only way to see the Dream Suite now is on this tour. Depending on your tour guide you may be able to take picture inside or not. You get one guaranteed picture in the sitting area but on the tour I was on we couldn’t take any additional pictures so the ones you see here are a secret.

Courtyard at the Dream Suite

The Disneyland Dream Suite includes a living room, open-air patio, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. When you enter the front door leading to the parlor room you will notice that it is designed French Provincial-meets-Fantasy-land style. There are original paintings in this room of a French Castle that inspired Sleeping Beauty’s castle. There is also a gorgeous fireplace designed like something you would see in New Orleans that when it’s turned on the “flames” look like fireworks. Each room of the suite has some sort of “Disney Magic.” In the living room it is this clock that on the hour plays Disney tunes you might know like “When you wish upon a star.” One of the bedroom is decorated like the trains Walt Disney loved and had a train that circles the entire room! The best “Disney Moment” which our tour guide called the “Goodnight Kiss” was in the Adventure Land master suite. When you pressed the button the lights dimmed and a oil painting came to life with mermaids from Peter Pan. The ceiling even had stars that twinkled! Peter Pan’s ship sails as a projection on the headboard just before the lights go back to normal. Though my favorite room was the bath with the giant soaking tub and replica Tiffany glass above it. The goodnight kiss there is music from Symphony No. 6 from “Fantasia” playing. I could picture myself enjoying a nice bath with the plush robes that hung nearby. (I wonder who does the laundry here).

Dream Suite Fountain

Overall doing the tour at least once if you have never done it. Another benefit is that your guide will “walk” you on two rides which in our case included Alice In wonderland and Peter Pan. It’s nice not to have to wait in lines! There is a lot to learn touring parks even if you are a huge Disney fan. Through the headsets you hear audio from the opening of the park and music from the wonderful world of Disney specials. All in all a special time in the happiest place on earth!

5 Tips To Make Your 1st RunDisney Race Magical

January 14, 2015 · 22 Comments

In November I completed my very first half marathon at the inaugural avengers run at Disneyland. I trained with my fiancé starting in July using the RunDisney training guide. I felt fully prepared for the race but learned a few things along they way that I am sharing below:

Expo
Cute Carpet Entrance At The Expo

1. Expo
Plan extra time at the expo. At the Disneyland events the expo is at the beautiful Disneyland hotel. I was extremely impressed how quick the lines for packet pick up was. I did make the mistake of not doing a full lap of all the venders and buying extra things because I saw something I liked better after purchasing something else. The expo also has great speakers. I caught Disneybound illustrating the perfect green alien costume. I really wish I caught the entire speech.

Carb Menu

2. Dinner the night before
Your dinner the night before is key for a healthy race the next morning. You will need reservations as most places near the park will be booked. In fact any Italian or pizza place will be almost impossible to get in. While most people swear by carbing up I settled for a plain chicken dish at Ralph Brennan’s. They also had special pasta menus for dinner just for runners that night too. On Friday Disney had a pasta in the park party. It was a extra cost so I didn’t partake but looking back all the cute Instagrams of Disney treats I wish I did.

3. Pick a better corral
This was my first half and my fiance’s first half in many years and we knew we were pretty slow so we signed up for the last corral. This was a big mistake and very frustrating because almost everyone in this corral was walking. We spent most of the race dodging the slower folks. We also noticed that when we got to the characters for picture opportunities the lines were already really long. If a runner falls below a certain time they could be pulled off the course so we know better for next time.

Our only character visit, but super cute!

4. Plot your Disney character visits
As mentioned above because we were in the slower corral by the time we got into the park during the race the character visits areas were packed. Next time I plan to look at the map ahead of time to plot where the characters might be and plan to run a bit faster before and in between to make up time if there is a long wait. We did capture a few photos but none with the popular Avenger characters we would have loved to capture.

The only Avengers area without a line, I think we fit in! 🙂

5. Ice bath
We stayed at the best western Stovalls in which is located across the street from Disneyland. I had stayed there previously and knew they had a great location, free breakfast and most importantly for this trip; a bathtub. It sounds painful (and it is) but a ice bath is key for a quick recovery. As soon as we got back to the the hotel from the race we grabbed plastic bags and went to the ice vending machine to fill them up. We dumped all the ice in the tub and filled it with cold water and plunged in for 15 minutes. It was awful but this prevents lactic acid buildup in your legs and ensure you will be able to walk in the parks the rest of the day. I was sore but not as sore as other folks I saw hobbling around in the next couple of days after the race!

Hopefully this won’t be my last RunDisney race as I’m already trying to figure out how to do the Star Wars event next year!
