Paloma Faith & The Unfortunate Smell At Her Show

December 3, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Paloma Faith is not a a well know name in the US, but in the UK
(where she is from) she can not walk down a street in London without being stopped by adorning fans. Her new album “Fall From Grace” comes out Tuesday but you can check out her new album now via the early stream on the NY Times.

In September I got to check out her show at the Rickshaw Stop in SF. I love having the opportunity to check out artists at intimate venues such as the Rickshaw. Paloma was darling, dressed in funky futuristic space outfit. She was backed by a small band and sounded poised even though her flight into SF was delayed and her luggage was lost.

This evening would have been perfect except for one thing… or person. Halfway through Paloma’s set something happened that is hard to explain unless you were there. A smell hit me and almost whipped me out cold. Someone had the nerve to fart in a very small enclosed space. I first noticed concert goers ahead of me starting to wave their hands in front of their noises. Then the odor traveled back to me and I was taken aback. Holy Cow! I immediately went into my purse to retrieve my hand sanitizer spray which happens to be lavender scented. That helped to dissipate the odor a bit but it still lingered and perfect strangers were asking to borrow my spray. Being in a small venue and fart really, really don’t mix. Especially if it was a epic fart like the one we experienced.

If you don’t believe me check out the conversation I had via Twitter with a few other concert goers:

What has the been the worst smell you have experienced at a show?

Newbie’s First SXSW 2012

April 8, 2012 · 2 Comments

You may recall last year I wrote a post about SXSW with tips from friends about how to make the most of your SXSW experience having never been I was eager to learn. I’m happy to report that this year I was able to attend for work! I’m so very appreciative as I had a amazing experience and sending someone to Southby (as people in the know call it) is nothing to shake a stick at.. it’s pricey but I believe very worth it.

Highlights of my 1st SXSW: Music

Let’s start with the most important aspect of this conference, the music. What I loved the most about Austin was from very corner of this city music was performed. From city coffee houses, large venues to even my hotel, you couldn’t miss it. In no particular order here were my favorite performances:

Lee Field and the Expressions at Red 7:

I’m a huge fan of soul music and Lee Fields is another classic story like Charles Bradley of an artist beating the odds and releasing a record at age 60ish. It’s simply amazing.

Thee Oh See’s with Carson Daly

Also at the Red 7 venue was Carson Daly’s Music Unlimited’s showcase. Daly being a huge fan picked a amazing showcase with Lee Field and the Expressions, Tennis, Cults, and the Thee Oh Sees. Thee Oh Sees is a rock back from SF and apparently Carson is such a fan he jumped on stage with the band! I love the unexpected and this was certainly was a surprise!

A$AP Rocky at The Spotify Show-This rapper has amazing stage presence as you might be able to make out he brought his whole crew on stage with him; throwing bottles and jumping around. It was a sight to behold.

Delta Spirit was playing Stubb’s on the last evening I would be in Austin. After standing on my feet all day for three days my dogs were barking but I dragged myself to this show. I loved the vibe of the venue; open air and amazing bbq and Delta Spirit fit right in!

The Food

One of the best meals I had at SXSW was at Papi Tino’s. I enjoyed amazing guacamole, refreshing mineral water (yes it’s hot and I was thirsty!) as well as enchiladas. But my favorite part of this meal  was the hand-made churros with homemade ice cream. Delish! The restaurant faces 6th street and has a quaint porch that features live music. My group was seated out side and with the breeze it was a enjoyable spot.

Free Stuff

I love free stuff, along with music it’s one of my favorite things. I was a little bummed I didn’t come home with armfuls of free stuff but I learned that there is more free stuff during the interactive week at SXSW. But I did come home with some pretty cool free AND useful things. The best thing I came home with was a dry-fit cotton Nike Fuel band exercise top. Nike had a huge basketball court/Skatepark/music venue at SXSW marketing their latest product the Nike Fuel band. After getting a free shirt and hanging out I really want a Fuel Band so their marketing ploy worked.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,700 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 28 trips to carry that many people.

Christmas Music That Doesn’t Make You Want To Hurl

December 23, 2011 · Leave a Comment

We are all in the throngs of Christmas time and unable to escape. I’m not sure when I started hating music..it’s probably because I played it year after year as a child in countless bands. So now while I do grocery shopping and I hear “Frosty The Snowman” I want to run for the hills or anywhere that doesn’t play Christmas music. Thankfully not all Christmas music makes me want to hurl. Keep reading to find a few albums might actually put you into the holiday spirit.

hOMe For The Holiday-Various Artist (Om Records)

Nothing says the holidays like chill dance music! This complication from San Francisco based label Om Records has artists like Kaskade doing “Still, Still, Still” to get you in the mood for a cocktail and  hors d’oeuvres.

Verve Remixed Christmas (Verve)

Out of all the “remixed” Christmas albums out there this one is probably my favorite. This albums features famous producers and artists like Brazilian Girls and The Orb “re-imagining” classic Christmas songs from Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, and Dinah Washington. What I like most is some of the songs like “Chilly Winds Don’t Blow” and “What A Wonderful World” wouldn’t be considered traditional Christmas songs but with these remixes they fit the theme perfectly.

The next two highlighted albums are what I like to call “Grandma Friendly” albums. These are suitable for dinner parties and the like.

A Swingin’ Christmas-Tony Bennett featuring The Count Basie Big Band

It’s not really Christmas until you hear classic big band music right? This album keeps it up tempo throughout and you’ll certainly feel the warmth too. You can’t really go wrong with Tony Bennett. The Count Basie Big Band is also clearly on point on this one too.

Elvis Christmas

I even love the album cover on this one and this one brings me back to a time when Christmas was simpler (No Black Friday shopping madness). Elvis Christmas is actually a two for one type of deal as it contains: all of the tracks from Presley’s 1957 Elvis’ Christmas Albumand his 1971 Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas. Elvis sounds wonderful on this album. My favorite track is “Santa Claus Is Back In Town.”

For even more hurl-free Christmas music check out Jason Miller’s Post.
